Transition as Intervention
In this workshop, we will be discussing two very distinct categories: gender identity (the way one IS), and what response the individual or caregiver has (the intervention). The interventions could include everything from communication, to advocacy, to transition. We will explore differences between gender expansiveness and being transgender, and how to assess for the need for intervention, if any. I will compare a child in distress due to not being able to live life as the gender that is in line with their brain gender identity as a child with a medical condition, and how the guardians can take action to help. We will explore interventions for medical conditions and then liken it to providing appropriate interventions to a child who may need to transition. We will also explore the many factors that cause guardians to doubt themselves or hesitate to take action.
