“What Are You?” Gender Identity and Microaggressions
Barbara Diamond presents a film-based training that illuminates how well-meaning people perpetuate inequality against transgender, non-binary, and intersex people. Participants will learn about microaggressions—unintentional slights that maintain larger systems of power—and how they impact transgender people. Barbara will screen her film What Are You?, which features LGBTQ activists in Portland, Oregon, who describe their experiences with microaggressions based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Through facilitated discussion and hand-on activities, participants will practice using respectful language about gender identity and discuss how to reduce bias in their workplaces and personal lives.
