Holding, Validating and Empathizing: Exploring Clinical Strategies to Address Gender Dysphoria with Transgender Youth
Many parents feel helpless addressing the emotional distress that gender dysphoria causes and as a result focus on “fixing” rather than really listening. As clinicians, we know it is not our job to “fix” the struggles of our clients, but the pain and anguish gender dysphoria causes can make “fixing” hard to resist. How can providers advise families about listening instead of “fixing,” and how do you as a provider, do that yourself? In this workshop, we will discuss and practice techniques for communicating with our clients and their families which focus on holding, validating, and empathizing.
