As a physician serving the trans community, I feel like a midwife: I am helping give birth to my patient’s true, authentic self.

My first introduction to Gender Odyssey was as a medical student seeking to learn more about providing healthcare to trans individuals. Within a few years, I was asked to provide a workshop at Gender Odyssey, helping to educate others on trans healthcare needs and the medical transition process.

One of my favorite parts of presenting at Gender Odyssey is speaking with people who live in places where trans healthcare is still a grassroots entity and patients are actively educating their healthcare providers. I am honored to help advocate by providing education and resources so that the web of support is expanded. As a physician serving the trans community, I feel like a midwife: I am helping give birth to my patient’s true, authentic self.

Over the years, my role within GO has evolved to include helping facilitate Gender Odyssey Family Conference Teen Programming and volunteering with trans/gender variant youth and teens at monthly support meetings for their families at Seattle Children’s Hospital. In this role, I feel like “Mama Bear”: fiercely protective of the youth and teens who continually amaze me with their spirit, wisdom and individuality.

The few days of the conference are magical and each year I don’t want it to end. The witnessing of kindredship and security of being seen, heard and supported is a transformative experience; and being part of that fruition is joyful and rewarding.
